Here’s a summary of Michael’s instructions for calculating the amount of sod needed for your project.
This is the most simple way I can tell you to figure out how much grass you’re going to need for your yard, and therefore what its going to cost. When we go out to someone’s yard to measure for a grass sod installation, we divide the yard into squares and rectangles and then measure each square and rectangle, calculate the area and add the measurements together.
We know that the average-sized person takes about a 3 foot step. So if you take seven 3 foot steps that’s 21 feet by another seven steps it’s 21 feet. An area of 21 by 21 feet is 450 square feet or one pallet. If you take five steps this way and you run into a fence that means you have nine steps this way and that’s going to be one pallet and if you can just keep that seven steps by seven steps in your mind, and that’s really the way that when I go out and look at the yard that’s exactly the way I do it.
I don’t carry a tape measure. I don’t have a measuring wheel and it’s pretty dang accurate. Then of course you use those figures for the number of pallets needed and multiply by the price per pallet, and that will give you a real good idea about the price of the project.
