Why Pick Raleigh St. Augustine Grass Sod

Why Choose Raleigh St. Augustine Grass for Your Next Lawn Project?

Raleigh St. Augustine grass is the most popular lawn grass in the Houston area for lots of good reasons, but it’s not good for some situations.  Houston Grass Owner Michael Romine talks about the pluses and minuses of Raleigh St. Augustine grass in this video.  Call us at 281-431-7441 for more information and a quote.

Why Pick Raleigh St. Augustine Grass?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️After 2 years of struggling with the sod laid down over construction debris and sand by our homebuilder we decided to either have a layer of sand or topsoil put over the existing grass or replace the grass. We had seen Houston Grass South many times from Hwy 6, so after a Google search, watching Michael in their YouTube videos and going to look at a sample of their Raleigh St. Augustine, we decided to replace our grass. Shannon in the office recommended 2 installers and when everything was scheduled, she made the payment process easy. The pallets of grass were delivered as promised and are high quality, beautifully green, and lush. Installation is ongoing, but that picture you’ll see when you Google “GREEN with envy” is a group photo of our neighbors. Thank you Houston Grass South for answering questions and for delivering an off-the-charts high quality local product that is affordable and showcases our home.  K. Swain on Google – 06/07/18

Summary of Michael’s Video about Raleigh St. Augustine Grass

Here we are in our first of two St. Augustines that we carry. We carry the Raleigh St. Augustine, and we carry Palmetto St. Augustine, depending on what your different requirements are as far as shade and what not.

Raleigh St. Augustine is the only grass that we keep here at our office for people who stop by for small quantities of grass. For larger quantities and for our other grass varieties, we either deliver directly for our customers or if they prefer, we can bring grass pallets they order to our office for pickup.

We sell Raleigh St. Augustine by the piece, by the pallet and by the half pallet.  It’s probably 99% of what we sell, and it probably comprises 95% of what our farm grows. We have a very large grass farm and the vast majority of our farm’s acreage is the Raleigh St. Augustine for good reasons.  It’s been that way a long time. If you look around in your neighborhood, more than likely Raleigh St. Augustine is what’s probably in your neighbor’s yard and probably in your yard as well.

In my opinion, it’s probably the easiest grass to care for as far as fertilization, mowing and things like that.  I would say that Raleigh St. Augustine is probably the easiest for a homeowner to maintain, whether you’re a first time homeowner or someone with years of experience caring for a lawn.

Shade Tolerance

If you compare St. Augustine with Bermuda grass for shade tolerance,  then the St. Augustine certainly can subsist with less sunlight than the Bermuda grasses.  The Raleigh St. Augustine probably needs five or six hours of direct sunlight and then indirect, filtered sunlight throughout the rest of day.  The sunlight under trimmed trees is what we would consider indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight around trees would be the morning or evening sun with the sun is coming underneath the trees from angles. While the Raleigh St. Augustine needs about five or six hours of direct sunlight each day, Palmetto St. Augustine grass can subsist on about four to five hours a day.  All grasses prefer 100% sunlight and they look their best in those conditions, but St. Augustine can deal with less sunlight than say any of the Bermudas.

Watering Requirements

As far as watering requirements, we say one inch of water per week. That would preferably occur over two waterings so half an inch of water twice a week.  The ideal time to water is the day after or right after you mow your yard. The next morning after mowing, you follow up with a half inch of water and then three or four days later another half inch. If it’s out of your hose that’s about two hours in each area to put out a half inch.   If you have an irrigation system, I’ve found that about 15 or 20 minutes per zone on a sprinkler system twice a week is enough water for established grass to do very well.

Fertilization Requirements

Fertilizations, just like all the St. Augustines, about two to three fertilizations per year and the St. Augustines can do very well.  Compare that to the Bermuda grasses which you’re fertilizing about twice as much per year. Again, two to three times a year, fall and spring fertilizer and then somewhere in between is usually ample fertilizer for the Raleigh St. Augustine.  We carry the fertilizers and weed and disease control products you need to keep your lawn looking great.

Mowing Requirements

We mow all the grass out here once a week and every seven days is kind of the minimum requirement for all these grasses. You never want to cut more than a third of the leaf off at any one time. So usually every seven days is kind of max for mowings.  If you mow less frequently and cut more of the leaf off with each mowing, you really can cause a lot of stress to the grass. So if you can mow about every five days with the Raleigh St. Augustine, that’s ideal but every seven days is kind of the minimum requirement.

As far as the Raleigh St. Augustine, I would say we sell the most of it for a good reason. It’s fairly forgiving and easy to take care of, and looks pretty good to most folks. And I think that it’s probably a real good option for lots of people.
