What is Zoysia grass? Zoysia is a type of grass that it came from Asia; is where it originated. And I guess there are parts of Asia that have similar environments to the Texas Gulf Coast with our warmth and humidity. And I know that there are different Zoysias that do better in colder climates and some that do better in warm climates.
What Zoysia Grasses Are Best for Houston?
As far as this part of the world and what we’re talking about: there’s two families of Zoysia grass. Basically, one of them has a thicker blade, and there’s probably 20, 30 types of each one. But one family has a little bit thicker blade and one of them has a little bit thinner blade.
The Zoysia grass that we sell the most of is the Palisades Zoysia grass. It’s in the thicker bladed family. It’s a beautiful grass; it has good drought tolerance. It does grow a bit slower than the rest of them. There’s really not much negative that can be said about the Zoysias other than the fact that it is one of the more expensive grasses that we carry. Zoysia grass is more expensive because of all of the research that’s gone into developing Zoysia grass varieties, and the royalties, and the fact that it takes so long for the Zoysia to grow back.
At our farm in Bay City, we can get two crops a year out of most of our grasess. But with the Zoysia grass, we only get one crop per year because it grows back together so slowly. So the land is only half as productive as with the rest of varieties of grasses as well. So that’s another reason that it does cost so much.
Zoysia is a great grass; there are not many things that can be said negative about it. It’s certainly something to consider if you’re looking at redoing your yard or something like that.
