Is Zoysia Grass Sod Good for Houston Lawns?

This is the 2nd time I’ve ordered zoysia from y’all. Last year I picked up a pallet at your facility – the grass looks great. This recent order was four pallets for my new house, and it was delivered on time. The grass looks great – I can’t wait to see it in the yard. I won’t get my grass from anywhere else.

Summary of Is Zoysia Grass Sod Good for Houston Lawns

Is Zoysia grass sod good for Houston homeowners? I would say absolutely. The only downfall I can think of is that Zoysia grass varieties are a little more expensive than the St. Augustines and Bermudas of the world. In another video we can link here we mention why that that is.

Our Zoysia Grass Varieties at Houston Grass

They are a little bit more expensive, but there are a whole host of reasons to choose them. We carry three different Zoysia varieties here.

Zoysia Grass Feels Good!

We carry the Palisades Zoysia, which is a little bit thicker bladed Zoysia, and we carry Emerald and Cavalier, which are the thinner bladed Zoysia’s. The Palisades, which is probably my favorite of the three Zoysia’s, needs the six or seven hours of direct sunlight per day. The Emerald and Cavalier have some good shade tolerance. So if you get more along the lines of four or five hours of direct sunlight per day, the Emerald and Cavalier are good options.

It has very good traffic tolerance and drought tolerance, and it does many things very well. A lot of people from the northern states like the look and feel of it, because it looks more like the fescue grass and bluegrass that they’re used to. Zoysia does not have the more coarse feel of the St. Augustine grasses.

How to Tell How Much Sunlight Your Lawn Gets

And the way to tell that is to, the easiest thing to do is, go out on a sunny day and take a picture with your phone about every hour or two hours and then scroll through and look and see how much light you get in the different areas, because that makes a lot of difference.

You’ll be sorely disappointed if you put the wrong variety of grass in a very shady area. The grass will just dwindle over time and will never be healthy and thrive in the area. So that is way up on the considerations list is the sunlight that an area gets. There is a Zoysia variety for pretty much every application — if you’ve got a lot of sunlight and if you’ve got not much sunlight.

Care Requirements for Zoysia Grasses

So as far as Zoysia’s go, they all are very aesthetically pleasing like I mentioned. The Palisades Zoysia is fairly easy to take care of. It’s just like taking care of Raleigh St. Augustine in my opinion.

Anybody who has taken care of a Raleigh St. Augustine yard in their past can care for Palisades Zoysia the same way. In the Houston area, pretty much anybody who has had a lawn before, has taken care of Raleigh St. Augustine because it’s the most common grass in this area. So the care of Palisades Zoysia is very straightforward.

The fine bladed Zoysia’s do have a few more care requirements. They have a slower growth habit, so if you get damaged spots in them, weeds can be an issue. These Zoysia grasses grow more slowly so they recuperate more slowly. Weed seeds can germinate in those damaged areas before the Zoysia grass has a chance to recover and then you’ve got a little bit of a battle on your hands with weeds in the areas.

So if you’ve got additional questions about Zoysia, please give us a call. In my opinion, they definitely are the most aesthetically pleasing of all the grasses that we carry and they feel very nice too. They are certainly something different than the St. Augustine grasses that everybody is used to and the Bermuda grasses that we have around this part of the world.
