Gray leaf spot is an issue with the St. Augustine grasses in general. It appears as little brown freckles on the green leaf of grass. That’s the first sign of the problem.
It’s not predominant in the Palmetto St. Augustine, but because Palmetto St. Augustine is usually put in the shade, that grass variety is often affected. Gray leaf spot is a fungus and since grass in shade may never really dry out if it’s watered a lot, it’s often at risk.
The gray leaf spot develops with excessive nitrogen and excessive moisture, and then if you install grass sod in the shade, those are really good conditions for creating that fungus. It’s usually a June, July, and August, problem because the fungus has to have the heat as well. So you’ve got to be careful about watching for gray leaf spot when you lay new grass and you water it a lot to get it established. You have no choice but to water it a lot during the first week or two as described in our Tip Sheet for Newly Installed Grass.
When you do that, you create conditions for gray leaf spot. And if you’re in the shade, like with a Palmetto St Augustine, it can, it can really be an issue.
