Why Buy TamStar Grass for Your Houston Area Lawn?
Limited Quantities Are Available!
TamStar grass is a new variety of St. Augustine grass developed by Texas A&M to incorporate the most sought after characteristics of other grass varieties. It’s shade tolerant and drought tolerant, producing a thick, fine-bladed turf. TamStar has a very lush, soft canopy. It’s also a better looking St. Augustine grass — it has a dark green color much like Emerald Zoysia grass.
A group of Texas grass farmers that got together, and they told the Texas A&M researchers what characteristics they wanted to improve on. The researchers used that information to develop TamStar from the existing grass varieties with those desired characteristics. The result is a grass that you’ll be proud of for many years to come. TamStar St. Augustine Grass Is Drought Tolerant
TamStar St. Augustine grass has shown very good drought tolerance in many trials, compared to Zoysia grasses, Bermuda grasses, and other St. Augustines, along with a quick recovery time, once irrigation and rainfall have occurred.
If you’re a recent arrival in Houston, you may think that drought doesn’t happen here, but most of Texas was in severe drought as recently as 2011. It not only could happen again, it will happen again, and your lawn will withstand the dry weather and rebound more quickly if you’ve installed TamStar grass from Houston Grass South.
TamStar Grass Less Susceptible to Grey Leaf Spot and the Southern Chinch Bug
Your grass can be put under stress in trafficked areas, in shaded parts of the lawn, and in areas that do not have very good air circulation. In those areas, TamStar grass has been shown to be less susceptible to Gray Leaf Spot. It also suppresses the Southern Chinch bug, which is common in our area during the heat of the summer.
TamStar St. Augustine Grass Is Cold Tolerant
TamStar grass has survived many winters in Dallas, and it’s been shown to have a good cold tolerance. As far as coming out of dormancy, it was about two weeks earlier than all the other grasses on the farm. In the spring, the TamStar grass comes out of dormancy a lot faster than other grass varieties. In our fields, it went from dormant brown to green very quickly.
“That’s been under my personal experience that’s planted at our farm. I saw it myself and I was really blown away. We were trying to green up the Raleigh St. Augustine and the Palmetto, and this stuff was growing green already.” John Romine
TamStar Grass Is Shade Tolerant
It is as shade tolerant as Palmetto St. Augustine grass and any of the fine-bladed Zoysia grasses like Emerald and Cavalier. Shade is a common factor in lawn health in the Houston area. You may move into a new home and there are small trees planted in your yard. Five years from now those small trees could be much larger trees providing shade, but also affecting the health of the grass growing in your yard. If your yard is planted in TamStar grass, it will be able to continue to thrive as those trees grow, as long as it gets some sun.
Care of TamStar Grass
TamStar is a low maintenance grass. You don’t need a special rotary mower to mow your TamStar lawn. A rotary mower with a good, sharp blade will do a great job. We recommend a cutting height of one to two inches with perhaps a little bit higher mowing height if you have shaded areas. Once-a-week mowing is fine with this grass.
Watering requirements and fertilization needs are similar to our other grass varieties. Please check our Tip Sheet for more information about the installation and care of our grasses.
