If your Bermuda grass has a lot of seed heads growing, then you more than likely you have common Bermuda grass in your Houston-area lawn. The common Bermuda grass produces lots of grass seed heads because that’s what it takes for it to survive in nature. Lots of seed heads means lots of seeds to germinate and spread the common Bermuda grass to new locations.
During times of severe drought and in places that are not covered by irrigation or sprinkler systems, you’ll notice common Bermuda grass moving into places where grass has died back. All those grass seed heads give the common Bermuda grass a competitive advantage in being able to move into areas where the lawn grass has died due to lack of water or some other problem. When all those seed heads hit the ground, they’ll germinate when they do get some rain, and they’ll produce foliage again.
An excessive amount of grass seed heads is not something that’s very pretty or aesthetically pleasing in a homeowner’s yard, which is the reason we don’t sell common Bermuda grass. We sell two other varieties, the Tifway 419 and the TexTurf 10. TexTurf Ten produces very few seed heads and Tifway 419 produces to my knowledge absolutely no seed heads.
So it all has to do with aesthetics. Seed heads do have their place in nature, but if you’re looking to avoid those you need to stay away from the common type Bermuda grasses and maybe use some of the newer types of Bermuda grass and some of the Bermuda grasses like Tifway 419 and TexTurf 10 that are used on sports fields and do not produce the grass seed heads
