Quality was fantastic, easy to get to root and it’s doing great, still the greenest on the street and it’s the middle of January.

Summary of How Long Does Grass Sod Take to Root

– How long does grass sod take to root? The answer’s going to be totally dependent on the time of year that we’re talking about.

If you plant grass in the spring, it takes to root pretty quickly.  If you lay the grass and then do what we have on our instruction sheet as far as watering, you could probably go out there three or four days later and pick up a corner and see the little white roots starting to come out of the block of grass.

And within 10 days you’re going to see tons of those roots and probably within two weeks you’re probably not going to be able to pick the piece of grass up at all because it’s going to be so rooted down.

How Long Does Grass Sod Take to Root in the Winter

If you lay your grass sod in the late fall or winter or early spring, it’s going to take longer. The grass isn’t growing as much and so the roots just put down a lot slower.  If you’re talking about winter time, they won’t put down roots at all.

No matter the time of year, you put the grass out there, spread it out, and you still water it a lot that first day to get it good and sealed to the ground.  You have to do that heavy watering no matter what time of year you’re planting grass.  You’ve got to do that heavy watering that day you lay it, no matter what.

So it depends on the time of year.  During spring and summer the grass will put down roots real fast.  During the cooler and cold months, it will be a slower process.

You lay the grass in 16 by 24 inch pieces so there are seams every 16 by 24 inches. If you lay grass in the springtime I would say within three or four weeks those seams will disappear and the grass will look like it’s been there for quite a while. Again, do it in the winter and it’s going to lay in those blocks for the entire winter.  So I would say it depends on the time of year, but normally it roots down pretty fast during the growing season.
