How are Delivery Costs calculated?
Sod Delivery Costs
Michael from Houston Grass explains that delivery pricing is based on mileage from their location, the customer’s address, and the number of pallets needed. Larger orders may be delivered by 18-wheeler with a forklift, while smaller quantities—especially farther away—may be delivered by pickup and trailer with hand offloading to a driveway or specified area. Typical local delivery fees range from $65 to about $150 in the greater Houston area; deliveries beyond $150 are usually not done unless the order is sizable, though some deliveries may reach around $200 in certain cases.
What Are the estimated Costs of Professional installation?
Professional Installation Costs
Michael from Houston Grass explains updated sod installation pricing and how costs vary by site conditions. For a job that is bare dirt and ready for installation with no prep work, installation is typically $100–$115 per 450-square-foot pallet, with the crew simply laying the sod. If prep work is needed, an on-site evaluation is recommended because requirements can range from minor grading to removing old grass with a sod cutter, bringing in and leveling new soil, and then installing new sod. For projects requiring that level of preparation, the typical range is $600–$650 per pallet for grass, removal, some dirt work, leveling, and installation, not including delivery. He recommends calling for a project-specific quote.
If Google Maps Has a Clear Satellite View of Your Project Area
How to Use Google Maps to Measure Your Project Area
The computer version of Google Maps (not the mobile app) has a built-in “Measure Distance” tool that can be used to measure the area of your lawn project. However, sometimes the Google Maps satellite view is obscured by trees or other obstructions. We recommend that you start by using Google Maps to check the satellite view of your project area. You should type your address into the search bar and hit enter. If you have a clear view of the planned project area then Google Maps can help you get a good estimate of the amount of grass sod you’ll need. If you don’t have a clear view of the project area with the satellite, there is a GPS Walk and Measure method (described below) that will work for you. Ready to get started? If you haven’t already done this open your internet browser and go to Google Maps.
If Google Maps Doesn’t Provide a clear view of your project area
How to Measure Your Project Area by Walking the Boundary
This video explains how to measure a sod installation area using your phone’s GPS when satellite images are blocked by trees/shadows or the lawn has an unusual shape. It instructs property owners to download a GPS area app such as “GPS Fields Area Measure,” allow location access, and notes it costs $69/year but includes a seven-day free trial. In the app, start a new measurement by selecting “Create New,” choosing “Field,” and then “GPS Mode.” Begin at a corner of the project area, tap “Start Measuring,” and walk the exact perimeter (along flower bed edges, fences, or driveway curbs) while the app traces the boundary in real time. After returning to the starting point, read the calculated area in square feet or square yards, then save or screenshot it; repeating the walk and averaging results is suggested. To estimate sod pallets, divide square feet by 450 or square yards by 50. For interior no-sod spaces (trees/shrubs), measure those areas separately by walking their perimeters and subtracting. Houston Grass recommends adding 10–15% to the estimate for waste from cutting around trees, shrubs, flower beds, and sidewalks.
