Here’s Michael talking about the differences between Nitro-Phos springtime fertilizers.
Summary of Recommended Springtime Fertilizers for Houston Lawns
Hi, I’m Michael with Houston Grass, and today we want to talk a little bit about the fertilizers that we carry. As you can see, we carry all of the Nitro-Phos Fertilizer products. And in this video here, I would particularly like to talk about the fertilizers you would use in the springtime. There are three of them. And by springtime, I mean mid-February to mid-March. That is when I would apply a springtime fertilizer.
Nitro-Phos Imperial Lawn Fertilizer
Here in the middle, we have the fertilizer you would use, and it’s actually the base fertilizer for all three of these. As you can see, it’s got the same fertilizer combination, the 15-5-10 in all of these.
If you’ve got no weeds to contend with, you would use this Nitro-Phos Imperial and follow the directions on the bag. It covers about 6,000 square feet, I believe.
You want to be sure to never “chicken feed out” to spread it. That’s where you reach in the bag and just throw the fertilizer out on the ground like you’re feeding chickens.
You always want to use one of the spreaders and follow the directions on the bag. If you’ve got no weeds to contend with, this is the one you would use.
Nitro-Phos St. Augustine Weed & Feed w/Atrazine 15-5-10
If you have weeds, you could pick from the two down here. The Nitro-Phos Weed and Feed in the purple bag uses atrazine as an active ingredient. It kills the small weeds, the broadleaf weeds like the clovers. It really doesn’t do much to eliminate the grassy weeds.
This weed and feed fertilizer is only for use on St. Augustine lawns. It is not recommended for use on Bermuda grass or Zoysia.
The weed and feed with atrazine is a product that you want to be careful with. You don’t want to use it year after year. It can be tough on your Oak trees, as atrazine is a pretty tough chemical. It does its job well, but you have to be very careful with it.
Nitro-Phos Weed & Feed 15-5-10
The other Nitro-Phos weed and feed is in the turquoise bag. It uses Trimec as an active ingredient. This Nitro-Phos Weed & Feed controls many lawn weeds, including chickweed, clover, dandelion, and many others. Nitro-Phos Weed and Feed with Trimec can be used on St. Augustine, Bermuda grass, and Zoysia grass.
The Weed and Feed Fertilizers Are Applied Differently
There is a difference in how these weed and feed fertilizers are applied. With the St. Augustine weed and feed with atrazine in the purple bag, you can have a yard that’s been mowed or hasn’t. You put it out, and then you water it in, and that activates the weed killer in it and the fertilizer too.
The Nitro-Phos Weed and Feed in the turquoise bag here uses Trimec. You should apply that one to a yard that hasn’t been mowed in a little bit. It’s got some length to the weeds. You want to put it out when the grass is damp. You put it out with your spreader. That chemical, the Trimec, actually sticks to the leaves of the weeds, and you’d leave it there for a couple of days before you do anything with it. That is how the Trimec kills the weed. Then after a few days you water your lawn to water-in your fertilizer. So it’s just a little bit different way of doing things.
