Does Zoysia Grass Look Better than Other Grass Varieties?
Have you heard about Zoysia grass? Asking yourself what Zoysia grass looks like? Call 281-431-7441 to get answers to your questions and quote for your project. In this video, Houston Grass South Owner Michael Romine talks about the look of Zoysia grass.
The Zoysia Grass Look Depends on the Variety
Well, I guess it depends on what type of Zoysia we’re talking about. There’s two families of Zoysia grass and one of them is a thicker bladed family, one of them’s a thinner bladed family. There may be 20 or 30 different types of Zoysia grass in each one of those families.
The thinner bladed Zoysia grass, I would equate it to a blade of fine bladed Bermuda grass that you may see on a golf course. The leaves look more like, on the thinner bladed ones, look like little spikes. They actually call them, if you look online, they call them spikelets and the density is measured in how many spikelets are on the stem and how dense those are. In the different varieties, that varies.
Zoysia Grass Looks Like Lush Northern Grasses
The thicker bladed family like the Palisades Zoysia grass is still a lot thinner than the St. Augustine grass, but the growth habit is more like what people that move from the transition zone or up north. They come down here and they’ve never seen St. Augustine and they want something like what they’re used to. And they come and they look at Zoysia and say, “This looks like what I had in my yard back home.” It does look like more of a grass that would be found more up north, at least that’s what I hear.
So it definitely doesn’t look like the Bermuda grasses. It would absolutely not be mistaken for a St. Augustine, and probably most Bermuda grasses, it would be a far stretch to mistake it. It’s kind of a different character.
