The Zoysia’s … people call and ask us several times every day, when is the best time of year to plant grass. Zoysia is no different. The best time to plant Emerald Zoysia is March, April and May on the Texas Gulf Coast, and I suspect, for all of the Gulf Coast, March, April and May are the best months.
Those months have the most moderate temperatures. Things are greening up. They’re putting down roots. The temperature’s not so hot, that it’s taking a ton of water to get ’em goin’. And the sun’s not just suckin’, or the cold’s not just suckin’ the life out of the plant. Things are really growing in the springtime.
We sell grass, year-round here. If it’s not raining, and not Christmas day, we have grass. Even throughout the winter, when the grass is brown, it’s fine to plant grass that time of year. But if you call me and ask me, “What’s the best time of year to plant grass?” I’m going to tell you March, April and May, every time.
In the winter time, you can take longer to plant it and you don’t have to water it as much. So, there are advantages to doing it in fall and the other off-season times of year.
Summer is a really tough sell though for grasses. There’s a whole host of issues that come about in the dog days of summer. So, I would try to avoid that if possible, but if you’re looking for the best time of year to plant Zoysia grass and other local varieties of grass, it’s March, April and May.
