– – How does Bermuda grass grow? Bermuda grass grows a lot like the other grasses. The runners look a little bit different. Bermuda grass is obviously thinner, but they all spread with some sort of runner, usually.

When we cut it at our farm, Bermuda grass as well as the rest of the grasses, we cut a 16 inch wide swath and we leave four inches and then take 16 and leave four. We call ’em ribbons, so every 16 inches, there’s a four inch ribbon that we leave and it grows back from that. Bermuda grass, this is gettin’ in a little bit more out of my area of expertise, but Bermuda grass uses rhizomes and some of the Zoysias as well, they use rhizomes that are just below the surface of the dirt.  So theoretically you could cut Bermuda grass, instead of leaving the four inch little ribbons that we call ’em, you could cut out the whole thing and it will come back from the rhizomes that are just below the surface of the dirt that you leave when you cut the grass.

So, but, like I said, the way we grow Bermuda grass differently, because it’s a farm.  For a residential application, I would say, you need to order the amount of square footage that you have in bare dirt. You get the pallets delivered and you need to solid sod that area. If you don’t, you’re asking for a whole host of issues, weeds being probably the biggest issue there, so that’s how I would say how Bermuda grass grows.
