Best Quality Grass Sod in Houston

Why do we have the best quality grass sod in Houston? In the video, Michael Romine talks about the care that goes into growing quality grass sod for Houston Grass.  Michael’s family has been in the grass business since 1981, and he grew up on his family’s grass farm.  He knows the work and money that go into growing high quality grass, and that’s why he’s very confident of the quality of every pallet he sells.  Here’s Michael talking about the quality that’s grown into our grass sod.  Call us at 281-431-7441.  Click here for our current prices.

Summary of Our Quality Grass Sod Video

Pricing is probably the biggest question that we answer. Everybody wants to make sure that they’re getting a competitive price on a product, and I certainly understand that. However the second question in that conversation from a consumer should be “well, what is the quality of the grass that I’m getting and how can I be assured that I’m not going to end up with a yard full of weeds?”

I’ve been to your shop several times over the years for several projects around the house – buying various quantities and varieties of St. Augustine – largest at a time was probably the one pallet (of Palmetto). Your pricing is competitive; Your staff and yourself are always helpful (with my questions, sometimes with loading – whatever may come up); Your place is clean and neat. This is kind of off the wall, but I so much appreciate your parking/loading area. The rocks/stones that you have for a surface don’t turn into and remain a mud pit after a rain. I don’t know why other places don’t have the wherewithall to do that – but most don’t, and I have personally experienced that huge mess. BUT, the biggest reason for me to recommend Houston Grass is, without a doubt, the quality and vigor and freshness of the grass – every time. It’s such a pleasure to drive up (or, last time, take delivery) of grass that’s deep green, not dried out (that’s not even in the conversation) and has obviously been cared for.

GatherUp Review

GatherUp Review

Because most people don’t purchase grass very many times in their lives, there’s not many “grass experts” out there. If you do a little looking around online there’s a lot of information out there. But grass quality is frankly not touched on that much.

All of our grasses are very competitively priced. We’re certainly not the cheapest because the farm that our grass comes from focuses on growing quality grass.  Triangle Turf down in Bay City is the farm I grew up on, and I have first hand knowledge of how it’s operated. I sat on mowers growing up and drove forklifts and helped haul grass out.

Now my brother runs that farm and my brother and dad operate the farm. I have very good knowledge of what goes on down there. I know how much more they spend per acre than most other farms. They have more men per acre who are constantly looking out for weeds and spraying fungicides to kill those weeds.

They’re just always on the lookout and doing everything they can to make sure every piece of grass that leaves the farm is of the utmost quality. They’ve made their name on that since the early ’80s when they started and it still absolutely stands today. My dad still has his thumb on it and that’s where he started and quality is just what they do.

Just Because It’s Green and on a Pallet Doesn’t Mean It’s Quality Grass

There’s a lot of farms that operate to the other extreme — they just have a lot of acres. They go out there and cut it with a mower a few times a year and let Mother Nature take its course. It grows back if it rains. If it doesn’t rain it doesn’t come back. They don’t fertilize, they certainly don’t spend the extra money on weed killer and stuff like that. But you may end up with an absolute mess on your hands if you get grass like that.

You may save a little bit of money, maybe 20 cents a piece, if you go down the road to some of the garden centers. Or maybe 10 bucks a pallet or something like that if you go someplace else buying pallets.

What happens in a lot of those cases, is they’re not out there “spot spraying” with Roundup. At our farm, we’re constantly looking for runners of the Common Bermuda grass that can so easily become established at grass farms.  Those seeds are in nature and they’re swirling around all the time so it’s easy to get them.

But we’re constantly on the lookout and flagging them, spraying them, and getting rid of them. As you can imagine, that’s a pretty intensive, labor intensive and chemical intensive endeavor.

A lot of farms don’t do that. You don’t see it and you get a few pallets of grass delivered, you lay it down and two months later it really starts to green up and everything comes out and you realize that you’ve got a bunch of weeds. The worst culprit would certainly be Common Bermuda grass because it can absolutely take over your yard.

You’re not going to get that with us and you may or may not pay a little bit more depending on who you call but our quality is absolutely second to none. So we turn out only the highest quality grass and it’s certainly something that should be noted. You can save yourself a lot of headache.
