How to buy Grass Sod for your Project?

I would highly recommend this company and that is something I rarely do. Just because a company does a good job for me, does not mean they will do the same for you. However, I am confident this is one of the few “good guys.” I was ready to buy grass and have it installed. I received a phone call from the owner, Michael. I did not know Michael but, he explained we lived in the same neighborhood and he had seen my yard. He told me that he would not feel good about selling me grass because it would be dead in two weeks. He pointed out that my trees were blocking all the sunlight and the grass needed at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. I hired a professional tree cutting company and Michael told me they didn’t cut enough. And he was right, so I hired another. Needless to say, Michael is an honest guy. As for as the installer, Omar Lopez, his was the best. He was as nice as he could be and his work was beautifully done. He has a great crew, he took his time and I could not be happier. Great company, great people.

Summary of How to Buy Grass Sod

If by asking “how to buy grass sod”, you’re asking where to buy it, you should buy it from Houston Grass.  Call us at 281-431-7441.  If you’re in our part of the world in the Metro Houston area, our grass is second to none. And we can fix you up no matter what kind of quantities you’re talking about. If you are out of our area, give us a call, and we can probably still tell you who we would call if we lived where you live.

Don’t Try to Use Plugs or Checkerboard Your Grass Pieces

If by asking “how to buy grass sod”, you’re asking how to buy it, a lot of people will call and ask us about planting plugs of grass.  You might be tempted to save money by planting small pieces of grass around your yard and letting the grass fill in between the plugs.  Other people are tempted to buy only enough sod pieces to checkerboard their project area.  Again, they’re hoping that their sod grass will fill in the bare dirt before the weeds do.

Our farm plants grass with “plugs”. They are the 16 by 24 inch pieces that everyone sells cut up into four inch pieces and dropped down onto the ground. A homeowner shouldn’t do that unless he or she has a chemical applicators’ license. That’s because you’ll need to apply specialized chemicals to kill the weeds trying to grow in those bare spots without killing the grass you want to fill in those bare spots.

Our farm has people on staff with a chemical applicators’ license who can manage all the weeds.  Everywhere there is not a piece of grass and there is exposed dirt you’re going to get weeds. And without having a Truegreen lawn service onsite all the time or a chemical applicators license, it would be a giant headache to kill the weeds without killing your grass too. If you try to use plugs or checkerboard your pieces of grass, your lawn would be really ugly for six or eight months until it grows in.

We Can Help You Select the Best Variety of Grass for Your Project

You buy grass in 16 by 24 inch pieces. We sell several varieties of it and if you call us we can steer you in the right direction as far as cost, shade situation, water situation and so on.  There’s a lot of things that factor in to the varieties that we would recommend for different circumstances.

We Offer Professional Installation and Videos Describing How to Install

You lay the 16 by 24 inch pieces out like tile. Then you lay them tight next to one another so there’s no sun penetration to the dirt. If there is dirt exposed you’ll often get weeds in those places. You don’t want to be fighting the weeds.

You lay it out there tight, and you put a lot of water on it the first day.  Depending on the time of year, you always put a lot of water on the first day. And then the first couple of weeks you kind of baby it along. We have a Houston Grass Tip Sheet to tell you how to take care of it.
