In this video, Houston Grass Owner Michael Romine talks about the cost to install sod if you do it yourself and if Houston Grass does it for you.
Summary of the Cost to Install Sod
How much does it cost to install sod? or How much does it cost to have Houston Grass install your sod? We generally charge $70-75 per pallet to install grass. If you get into the truckloads of grass, multiple truckloads, then the price may be a little bit less. But we charge $70-75 whether it’s a front yard, back yard, whatever the conditions are. Prices are updated to 2019 from the prices quoted in the video — call our office at 281-431-7441 to confirm current prices.
That does suppose though that your yard prepared for installation and you have bare dirt, leveled and ready for installation. That’s always the question that we’re going to ask you when you ask about how much does it cost to install a pallet of sod?” We’re going to say “70-75 dollars but it has to be bare dirt and ready to install.”
What Do You Mean by “Ready to Install”
That means it’s free of all vegetation, debris, it’s leveled up with sand or top soil the way you already want it. If your answer to that question is “No, it’s not ready.” we’re going to get your name, number and address and we’re going to send a member of our install crew out to look at your yard and assess what it would take to get it ready to install grass sod.
We’ll check whether or not it’s going to need a sod cutter to rip the old grass out. We’ll also check whether your yard needs an application of a weed killer like Roundup to kill the old vegetation before using the sod cutter. If you’ve got a lot of Bermuda grass we’re going to suggest you Roundup it first. We do provide that service, as well.
After the weed killer is applied, we’re going to come back a week, or week and a half later, with a sod cutter and take that dead grass out. And then we would level it up if it needed it at that point.
Those are all things that the install crew has to come out and assess on a case-by-case basis frankly though. That’s a little bit more subjective.
Our Install Crew Can Tell You What’s Needed
If you have a new house and the dirt’s just the way you want it, it’s not holding water anywhere, and it’s draining the way you want it we would say it’s $70-75 a palette to install the grass times the number of pallets. We do only deliver full pallets of grass so the $70-75 is kind of a set number.
After building our first home we needed to find a good company to help us sod our large backyard. After heavy rain a lot of the sand had washed away so we needed someone who could also help us with some grade work and evening out dips and low spots. I called three companies to compare price and services and was immediately impressed with HGS. Anderson came to our home the afternoon of my initial telephone call to walk my back yard and talk to me about the grading and weed control and their services. They delivered extra sand to even out our entire yard and add more support around the fence line. They delivered bright green, very healthy grass and completed the entire install in one day and Anderson called me to give frequent status updates throughout the project since i couldn’t be present. About a week after installation i had a concern about a small section that was starting to brown and Anderson came over same day as my call to inspect the grass and talk me through its care. Customer service at its finest!! Highly recommend HGS.
