Recommended Lawn Products

These are the fertilizers, fungicides and insecticides that we’ve tested over the years, and these are the lawn products that we recommend as working with our grass in our unique Texas Gulf Coast climate.

Lawn Care Products Tested and Based on 45 Years of Experience

We carry these products at our office in Arcola. We’re on McKeever Road, a few miles east of Sienna and just west of the FM 521 intersection. Call us at 281-431-7441 for answers to your questions about picking the right fertilizer, when to apply pre-emergents and applying the right fungicide or herbicide.

Nitro-Phos Imperial Fertilizer

If you do not have weeds to contend with, you can use the Imperial Lawn Fertilizer. Imperial is the same fertilizer as the weed and feeds. It’s less expensive because it doesn’t have weed killer in it. It will give your yard a good boost for the springtime, which around here should be mid-February to mid-March.

Nitro-Phos St. Augustine Weed & Feed with Atrazine

This is the weed and feed we recommend on St. Augustine grass only. It should not be used on Zoysia or Bermuda. You would generally put it out mid-February to mid-March in the Houston area.

Nitro-Phos Weed & Feed with Trimec

Nitro-Phos Weed & Feed with Trimec is recommended for St. Augustine, Bermuda grass and Zoysia grass. Weed & Feed with Atrazine is only recommended for St. Augustine grass. You would generally put it out mid-February to mid-March in the Houston area.

Nitro-Phos Superfurf Fertilizer

The Nitro-Phos Superturf Fertilizer would be what you would use in the late spring or early summer, probably May or June in the Houston area. It’s a 19-4-10 combination and covers about 7,000 or 8,000 square feet.

Nitro-Phos Fall Special Fertilizer at Houston Grass

Nitro-Phos Fall Special Fertilizer

The Nitro-Phos Fall Special Fertilizer combination is an 8-12-16. In the fall, what you’re looking for is not a real green-up of your grass. You’re just trying to give it some nutrition and key ingredients to get it good and healthy going into the wintertime and help it come out strong in the spring.

Nitro-Phos Barricade Preemergence

What Preemergence does is create a barrier in the soil that keeps the weeds from ever coming up. It doesn’t actually kill weeds. But if you put this out three times a year in the Houston area, it keeps a lot of weeds from ever coming up.

Heritage G Fungicide

After trying lots of fungicides over the years, we recommend and we carry Heritage G. It works well to prevent and control gray leaf spot, summer patch, and brown patch, when you use it according to the label in several applications.

Cyonara Liquid Insecticide

Cyonara is a liquid lawn insecticide that you apply by attaching the container to the end of your hose. You turn the water on, click this button, and spray it out. You would use this chemical for sod webworms, chinch bugs, and many other insects that damage Houston area lawns.

Wisdom Granular Insecticide

One of the products we carry is Wisdom, an insecticide that comes in a 25-pound bag. It looks like sand because it is sand, but it’s impregnated with Bifen insecticide. Apply it with your spreader according to the directions—it’s a good value and covers a lot of square footage. After you spread it, water it in; when the water hits it, it activates the insecticide and washes it off the sand into the soil where it can do some good against pests like chinch bugs and grub worms. If you have questions about Wisdom or an insect issue, give us a call.
