– Is Zoysia grass soft? Relatively, yes, I would say that stands to reason.
Most people are comparing it to St. Augustine grass. People are used to the big thick leaves and thick stems of St. Augustine. And, so if you’re comparing it to St. Augustine it doesn’t matter what type of Zoysia you’re talking about, they’re all softer than that.
Now if you want to get down to the nitty-gritty there there are some varieties of Zoysia grass that are softer than others. The Palisades Zoysia grass is a softer one. There’s some of the types, the finer bladed varieties of Zoysia that I would describe as more prickly.
The leaves of some of the finer-bladed varieties have more give than others and some of them feel kind of like a wiry brush. We don’t sell a whole lot of those, so I don’t handle them a whole lot. I know that between the Cavalier Zoysia grass and the Emerald Zoysia grass, one of them has a more prickly feel to it than the other.
The Palisades Zoysia grass I would say is the softest. It’s a little bit coarser leaf, but we have Palisades Zoysia growing in a plot out in front of our office. People love to take their socks and shoes off and walk on it. It has so much give and you leave footprints in it almost when you walk through it. It feels really nice. It’s really dense and you get that carpet-like look and feel to it.
