Summary of What Grass Is Sod Made Of

– What grass is sod made of? Well, people in the Texas Gulf Coast area use the terms grass and sod as kind of universal terms for the same thing.  All of the grass we sell is sold as sod and that’s the best way to start a lawn in the Texas Gulf Coast area.  Seeding a lawn is not a good option in this area.

There’s lots of varieties of grass. We sell seven different varieties — two varieties of Bermuda grass, two varieties of St. Augustine grass, and three varieties of Zoysia grass.  All are sold as grass sod in 16 inch by 24 inch pieces or in large rolls in the case of Bermuda grasses.

When you ask what grass is sod made of, it implies that some grass varieties are going to be planted as seed.  If you’re used to some of the cooler season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass, those are often planted as seed in establishing a lawn.  The problem in warmer climates like ours is that weeds would out-compete any of cool season grasses like Bluegrass.  In order to beat the weeds, you need to cover your bare dirt and future lawn area with healthy grass, and that’s what sod is.

None of the varieties of grass we sell come as seed.  We grow our grass on our family farm from ribbons of grass turf left behind after harvest.  You can buy Common Bermuda grass as seed and that’s the grass you see hydro-seeded along highways.

However, Common Bermuda is considered a weed in lawns. Its seeds can be spread by the wind, and we get lots of calls about how to get rid of it without killing your lawn grass.
